Australia's first debt swap announced in budget

Wednesday, May 20, 2009
The Government announced in the federal budget in May that it will cancel up to $75 million in debt owed by the Government of Indonesia to Australia while at the same time the Indonesian Government invests $37.5 million in the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for approved tuberculosis programs. We congratulate the Government on fulfilling its election promise.

In proceeding with the debt for health swap, Jubilee Australia cautions the Government to first rule out any corruption involved in the commercial dealings between the two countries which led to the accumulation of this debt.
Jubilee Australia is an independent non-profit organisation campaigning for the cancellation of harmful debt accumulated by developing countries, and for a more just and equitable world.
