Jubilee Honoured with Impact Excellence Award from Ulster University

Release Date: 15-May-2017

Belfast, 11 May: Jubilee Australia's work on Bougainville has been recognised with a Research Impact Excellence award from Ulster University.

The honour was awarded jointly to Jubilee Australia and Dr Kristian Lasslett, a lecturer in Criminology at Ulster University, in the category of social renewal. The award was given principally for the research and outreach that Jubilee has done with landowner groups in Bougainville since 2013.

Jubilee has produced two major pieces of research on Bougainville: its 2014 report Voices of Bougainville which examined the position of communities in Panguna to the region's troubled past and the plan to reopen the mine, and the 2015 report The Devil in the Detail, about the government's dangerous new mining law.

The announcement came just a few weeks after the revelation that Jubilee's more controversial work on Bougainville has been vindicated by research done by the UNDP.

Dr Lasslett, who was there to received the award, said it was 'a very pleasant surprise' and that it was a testimony to Jubilee's 'dogged resilience' in the face of criticism.
