Across the Pacific region, the large-scale extraction of natural resources ā€“ including timber, minerals, oil and gas - is often presented as the clearest pathway towards economic development and improved wellbeing for citizens. However, extractive operations have repeatedly failed to deliver the improved livelihoods they promised and have been accompanied by dispossession, environmental destruction, abuses of human rights and offshoring of profits.
At the Research for Development Impact Conference in July 2021, Jubilee Australia joined researchers and campaigners from ActNow!, Centre for Environmental Law and Community Rights, Minerals Policy Institute and UNSW Canberra for a roundtable discussing recent research that aims to question this extractive model of development and expose the links between corporate actors in the region and unsustainable development.
