Mining in the Solomon Islands

Jubilee Australia's Resource Centre

Australian miner Pacific Bauxite has big plans for the Solomon Islands. It has been exploring around Noro in Western Province and Nende in Temotu Province.

Communities in Nende have been fighting for years to keep Pacific Bauxite out of their community, and recently celebrated a victory when the Mining Minister rescinded the company’s exploration licence.

Community concern with Pacific Bauxite is two-fold. First, there are concerns that community consent was not fairly obtained or informed. Second, communities are deeply concerned about the potential environmental impacts of mining. The Nende community are subsistence farmers and use the land for subsistence, hunting game, finding herbal medicine and obtaining building materials. Any impact on the environment will have a profound impact on most aspects of their lives. Land in the Solomon Islands represents people’s heritage and future.
